It has been more than a year since Oxenfree developer Night Scholl Studio announced that their next project will be taking the player to the hellish underworld ran by Satan himself. But rather than our standard interpretation of Hell being a torturous wasteland beneath the Earth’s crust is instead replaced with an urban dystopia run down from years of partying and poor taste in cleanliness of the creatures who inhabit this dimension.
Today, in collaboration with PlayStation the team announced that Afterparty will be coming just a few days before Halloween in fact. And already said with their hands on Sony’s platform, there is a specialized dynamic theme that redressed your home screen as a “demonic pub.” On Xbox Wire, Microsoft confirms that the game will also arrive to the Xbox Game Pass the same day the game launches next month.
Directing the post towards the game’s inspiration, Studio Director Sean Krankel shares that the developer wanted to expand from its first project by creating a more sinister, yet overly sarcastic adventure to experience. “The game evokes the vibes of Bill & Ted, Superbad, and Beetlejuice, but as a playable bender through Hell’s weirdest districts.”

Krankel does go on to emphasize on the writing team’s enjoyment of implementing two personas to be casted as the protagonist, twisting your expectations alongside the zany cast of characters you will run into when making your stay in Hell. Of course, just like Oxenfree, decisions will also have a drastic impact on your outcome when taking in the scenery and the denizens that inhabit the game’s world.
With the obvious overtone of college-scene activities playing a large role in the game’s pacing, drinking alcohol is how you play the game by default. Krankel adds on that there will be roughly 30 different drinks that you can consume where each will give off a different effect. Party games such as beer pong, dance-offs, and shot stacking are other encounters that will be implemented to breath more life into Hell.
For a more hand-on approach of the game, you can read my coverage of the game that I discussed from my time at PAX East earlier this year.
Afterparty will be coming to Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC on October 29, 2019.
