In the larger picture of things for Koei Tecmo, the firm is eager to explore AAA projects in the console space. While exploring the adaptable market on PC, it has invested in new talent with a studio opening as of fall 2024. The decision includes doubling its staffing to over 5,000 employees as the firm tackles new projects in that sphere.
One of the anticipated announcements came in the form of Ninja Gaiden 4. Announced alongside the shadow drop for Ninja Gaiden II Black, Team Ninja in collaboration with PlatinumGames not only remastered the 2008 original, but it is also shipping a new installment for the series as well later on in 2025.
During the Xbox Showcase this weekend, Team Ninja & PlatinumGames unveiled the slated October 2025 release date for Ninja Gaiden 4. You can watch the release date trailer in the video below:
“This game offers a lot of new things you can do — that’s one of its major appeals. We’ve paid special attention to the depth, range, and expansiveness of play, and especially to the techniques that can be elevated based on a player’s skill level,” PlatinumGames director Yuji Nakao shares. Nakao elsewhere in the blog post elaborates the choice for a new protagonist is thanks to the big time gap since the last release.
“One of the key reasons we chose to introduce a new protagonist this time is that Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series’ return after a long hiatus. We trust that longtime fans who’ve followed the series so far will continue to support, but at the same time, we also wanted to create a character that would allow new players – those starting fresh with the franchise – to begin on equal footing and grow alongside the protagonist.
“That was the shared vision between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames. And from that vision, Yakumo was born. Of course, reliving the original Ninja Gaiden experience still holds great value, but we believe that what both longtime and new fans are truly looking for is a new form of “play” that goes beyond what’s come before. With that assumption in mind, we positioned Yakumo as a fresh yet somehow nostalgic pillar that would help us create a game that feels both renewed and familiar.”
