OG XBOX Backwards Compatibility Hits PC Today, Achievement Support Coming In Approaching Months

For XBOX, console is only one side of the coin for the firm’s focus. Another is PC Gaming. Just earlier in April this spring, XBOX Mode launched for the platform injecting a streamlined experience for the platform already available on console. Just the year prior, Microsoft touted that this experience would include native support for purchase libraries; reported to also cover XBOX 360 titles as well.

For the past few months, the XBOX firm has entertained that an update for backwards compatibility would be on the way. “[the game preservation team] will release some iconic games from the past that are now going to be able to be played in entirely new ways.” Not to mention fragments of game importing coming to the PC launcher as well for users to categorize all of its games as well as apps too.

On Wednesday, Microsoft revealed that XBOX backwards compatibility is branching to PC. After XBOX Cloud Gaming faced support in 2021, PC is now welcoming the support as well. Currently, there are four titles that are now live on the platform via XBOX Game Pass or direct purchase. The games being BLiNX: The Time Sweeper , Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy.

“XBOX Backward Compatibility on PC launches in early release, starting with four classic original XBOX games, now playable on PC and handhelds for the first time ever,” XBOX vice president of next generation Jason Ronald shares. “This marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve XBOX games from the past and bring them to PC over time. And we are not just enabling you to play them on PC. We are also adding new features to make your gaming experience better than ever.”

Additionally, Achievement support is confirmed to be on the way for the highlighted titles in the approaching months. “Later this year we will be bringing one of the top fan-requested features to select original XBOX games on both console and PC: Achievements.” This has been a longing for XBOX fans to receive this update as PlayStation implemented the support for its legacy titles back in 2022.
