Publisher Panic for years has remained fairly recognized for its work behind prominent indie titles like Firewatch & Untitled Goose Game. But what was surprising was when it announced it was adding its own console to the market. Revealing the Playdate: reminiscent of the Nintendo Game Boy it offers a portable, backlit device with a crank attached to its body. The announcement came before the 2020 pandemic and slowly rolled out to the public.
The months following were met with constraints as production fulfillment resulted in the device delaying its launch to 2022. And after delivering to users, Panic committed to its Season One release plan for those that backed the game at launch. Additionally, Panic in 2023 also launched a new ‘Catalog’ feature which opened a storefront for users to sell their titles directly on the platform.
Now in 2025, Panic is back with new information. Season Two for Playdate is on the way and is set to release later this month. Unlike Season One, Season Two will be the first premium update for Playdate and will cost you $39. You can watch the rundown video below:
The list of featured titles consists of : Fulcrum Defender, Dig Dig Dino!, Taria & Como, Shadowgate PD, Black Hole Havoc, CatchaDiablos, Chance’s Lucky Escape, Long Puppy, Otto’s Galactic Groove!!, The Whiteout, Tiny Turnip, and Wheelsprung. “Most season games are appropriate for everyone. A small number of games deal with mature themes and mild violence,” Panic writes.
“Games will be delivered two per week, for six weeks. […] The entirety of Season Two takes up about 550 MB of space. […] Most season games use the D-pad, A and B buttons. About half of the games require the use of the crank, precision and fast movement.” Panic is also releasing a new Playdate cover that matches the handheld itself; priced at $34.
