For most of the games I’ve covered at PAX East this year, most of them were story driven single player titles and I felt like I haven’t got enough with the 30 minute demos I’ve gotten with the ones I’ve played. Pathologic is one title that grabs you straight from the start and makes you want to dig and discover what’s under the surface of the game.
Pathologic originally was released in 2005 by Ice-Pick Lodge for the PC and now the team is back to remaster the game for the current generation platforms. I’ve interviewed the games producer Ivan Slovtsov with eager questions that needed to be answered after playing the demo, and he was nice enough to answer everything I threw at him to the best of his ability. First asking the funding process of the game, Pathologic was crowdfunded and for every backer received a demo for the pre-alpha. With feedback about 90% positive, they later released the demo to the public. For a game being rebuilt for the modern generation took a lot of effort and resources to bring the 2005 game to todays standards. I asked Slovtsov about the remastering process and he responded with:
” it was a very different experience. Working with the same characters and setting but a spin on how the story is being told. Pathologic will be more narrative than text based like the original.”
My next question asks what he thought what everyone enjoyed most about the remastered version, and he couldn’t have been more right. Answering me that the team’s strong suit is atmosphere. Giving the player the urge to discover what’s in store for them and to figure out the mystery behind the plague that has infested the town, which is now a real opponent when playing the game. The plague is its own person and its behavior changes constantly to react differently to you, becoming more complicated as you progress through the game. As well as changes to the games narritive and survival systems, making the game more immersive and less “geeky” and improved the fighting in the game.
With the remastered version of Pathologic on Steam and GOG, I finally asked if there would be any chances of seeing the game available on consoles, Slovtsov answered with:
“we’re planning on a console release for Pathologic in 2018.”
