Although the Xbox platform is once again tossed into discourse with the recent news at 343 Industries – Halo Infinite head of creative Joseph Staten exiting – now is a better time for an update on the Gears IP. Whilst the series has been dormant for sometime, the series still remains to be one of the most consistently positive releases for the platform. Although the last entry was Gears 5 in 2019, Gears Tactics did ship in 2020.
However, enough time has passed for The Coalition to reveal what it has planned next. Over a year ago, it was revealed the team was responsible for the demo ‘The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience’. But according to recent reports, a new Master Chief Collection-like project is said to be in the pipeline already. Of course, players are also expecting Gears 6 to be underway too.
In a recent Xbox Era Podcast, host Nick Baker revealed an alleged leak for the logo of the next mainline installment. Howbeit, it was uncertain if the image was genuine or not. It was not long before Xbox marketing director Guy Welch went to Twitter to verify that the logo was not legitimate.
For further context as to when players can face the next project from The Coalition, the wait is expected to be longer than the usual development cycle. This is to blame for the transition of Unreal Engine 5. When originally announcing the team will be moving to the new development suite, it noted announcements will be prolonged for the time being. The firm did present the ‘Alpha Point’ demo demonstrating its capabilities with latest version of Unreal Engine.Â
Additionally, Gears of War is still churning away at efforts to hit the silver screen. In a recent announcement, it was confirmed that Universal Pictures has handed the production over to Netflix. You can read the full report by heading here.
