Yesterday, Sega unveiled that the firm would be reigniting the flame for the Game Gear with the new Micro iteration of the 1990 handheld. Aimed for October, the newer and smaller device would include four titles on four separated, color-coded handhelds. Fans in Japan can decide to buy each individually or in a full bundle which will also include an updated Big window to fit the miniature device.

But according to reports that also surfaced that same time Sega is also working on a new initiative for arcade games as well. According to Ryokutya2089, Sega is currently in the works of creating a cloud-based service for arcade titles with the alias ‘Fog Gaming’. This new service would stand to help allow arcades during the pandemic especially, but would essentially hold as a way for users to keep playing without having to leave the confines of their home.

What can be derived from the report discloses that with the arcade titles being funneled through cloud-based computing would result in receiving hardware to cost less in both CPU and GPU power. Additionally, players can also find that latency in response to controller input would also be lower due to the process of relaying the game through the cloud.

Atop of consumers being able to access their favorite arcade cabinets without having to step outside, it is also emphasized that businesses will also be able to continue operating as well collecting revenue well after door close during business hours. If properly executed would show to be a silver bullet to the issue at hand regarding the impact already made by COVID-19.

Perhaps, this tactic could also be translated to other regions outside of Japan later on for enthusiasts who want to partake in the service. We have already witnessed a similar take in this with Akiba Catcher where users across the globe can use a crane machine from Japan to possibly win a themed toy from the country.

What do you think about Sega’s approach to preserve business for arcade machines?
