Microsoft’s announcement of the formerly titled Project Scarlett, now upcoming Xbox Series X took the internet by storm with its tall structural design as a vertical system which breaks the norm of traditional retail consoles which typically being horizontal, flat-laying units. While fans and viewers of the announcement were taken by surprise that a reveal of next year’s hardware would be presented at the Game Awards, it left a lasting impression that has yet to fade out of conversation even a week later.
However, plenty of questions were left as to what will come from 2020’s next generation from Microsoft. Such as real-time processing power of the software that will launch for the product or even a tangible expectation of the unit itself. Thankfully, video game outlet IGN did that for the world by mocking up a estimated guess for what the upcoming console will be exactly.
Going into the psychology of the design, Microsoft wanted to go with a more intimidating approach to console’s overall look in particular, which seemed to be the driving decision to make a look that would literally tower over competitors. Likewise, this would also mask the interior of the hardware as the new console is also said to be four times more powerful than the current Xbox One X; requiring more space to contain the beast within.
Even more, something that would stand out as well. Again directing towards the norm of console architecture, a vertical console is unheard of, more down the lines of a PC tower than a retail unit for sure. That is where the light on top also hones in a trademark look to quickly identify that this is a Microsoft product aside from the clearly-placed Xbox logo on the front of the unit.
Before I go further, here is a comparison of the upcoming and the ongoing side-by-side:
This time, the unit still presents itself to be the dominant console despite it being placed horizontally rather than the advertised vertical positioning. Standing to be more than two times the height of the neighboring Xbox One X, the console shows to be the embodiment to “kill monsters,” which Microsoft clarified during the Project Scarlett reveal back in June at E3.
While Microsoft does state that the unit can be place either way, the company does recommend standing the console up as shown initially for a more efficient way to release heat from the console. Especially with the amount that this console will be pushing for next generation standards, it will be releasing a lot of stress from the guts of the hardware within.
Parallel to the talk of Microsoft’s upcoming unit, a spokesperson for the console giant clarified following the console’s announcement that the unit is simply called ‘Xbox’. Implying a rebrand for the new hardware, there will be a few iterations that will follow the Series X as well.
What are your thoughts on the imitated/estimated look of the unit?
Xbox will be launching next year sometime in late 2020.
