When Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment revealed Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy at the Xbox Games Showcase I viewed it as one of the more underrated announcements during that show.
The A Plague Tale series thus far has been well received since 2019 with A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Now with, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, we are in for a treat.
We had the opportunity to preview the game by playing the first two chapters, giving us just a taste of what it has to offer.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a solo action-adventure game that stars Sophia, the main protagonist of this game and we know her from A Plague Tale: Requiem. It’s worth noting that this game is set fifteen years before these events as a young and fierce plunderer, Sophia, is about to face her own destiny.
Pushed aside from one of her gang’s most important missions in Venice, Sophia chooses to flee, leaving everything she knows behind. She takes her destiny into her own hands and sets out for distant shores that have, somehow, been calling for her since childhood: the Minotaur’s Island.
Upon reaching the island, Sophia realizes that something or someone there resonates deep within her. Their fate intertwined and she experiences flashbacks taking her back to the Minoan era. She will unfold ancient mysteries and explore the island’s depths in search of answers.
Along her journey is Leni who we also get to know more about in this small gameplay window.

In the preview for this game we got a taste of the story but even more importantly, we got a taste of the combat, exploration, and puzzles. We also learned about Sophia’s notebook where she keeps records and writes down solutions as you discover them for puzzles and such.
The two chapters we got to play was Chapter V – Desolation It Wrought and Chapter VI – What Lies Beneath. Our gameplay was done on PC playing with mouse and keyboard.

Gameplay Is Fun & Satisfying
In my experience I found the overall combat to be satisfying from parrying attacks, blocking attacks, and delivering the final blow on enemies. I’ve played plenty of games with this style combat but this time it feels different. When you execute enemies you can almost feel it through the screen.
Fighting enemies at the same time can be a challenge, but I do love the idea of a challenge. When your health is down you can recover your health by killing enemies. It would be smart to not be so aggressive during battle as well. What will help you fight are throwable objects nearby that will give you the opening to attack them.
The gameplay experience aside from combat is more linear, but with each chapter having areas of exploration. If you go a little off course you’ll likely find an Artifact which are essentially collectibles in the game.

There is also a skill tree featured in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy that will help improve your combat abilities. You can unlock the option using Resonance Points to upgrade your kick ability to now do a double kick against heavy enemies to stun them. Or you could also upgrade your critical hit so when you kill an enemy in that fashion you’ll temporarily gain a shield.
There are also plenty of accessories to find in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy that will help Sophia in combat.
We also got just a glimpse at the creative puzzles that Asobo Studio created. Sophia’s notebook comes in handy with some of them including the first major one you’ll run into. I never played a game in the series up until this point and I for some reason get Tomb Raider vibes.

Stunning Game
We also can’t forget to talk about how stunning the game looks already. This was of course an early build, but it did not lack when it comes to its looks. I could look at the water all day and the lighting perfectly hits the environment so well. Everything about the game’s cutscenes and its overall graphics is impressive to me.
For someone who has never played either of the ‘A Plague Tale’ games, Resonance already has me hooked for when it releases on August 27, 2026 for Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC. We only just got a small look at the game, but it’s definitely going to be a fun adventure this August.
