In the ongoing search for a solid Star Wars game from the licensing agreement established between Disney and Electronic Arts, many argue that nothing truly came to fruition until Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment arrived with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019. Despite Star Wars Battlefront & Star Wars Battlefront II selling well, the response to the games respectively were not in favor of long-time fans.Â
In 2020, Bespin Bulletin reported that as the sequel for Respawn Entertainment’s title aims for a 2022 release, chances for a third Battlefront does not look to be in favor of DICE. This is namely due to the licensing deal expiring for Electronic Arts which we witnessed blossom into Lucasfilms Games. Now, Respawn Entertainment is officially helming three Star Wars titles as of this winter.
Following the events of the announcement, GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb who spoke with sources internally at Electronic Arts revealed that the likeliness of Battlefront III is not on the table. Instead, that window officially closed now with a separate team occupied with the Star Wars brand under Electronic Arts.
From the statement by the publisher, the Apex Legends developer is said to be helming a new first-person shooter experience within the Star Wars IP. Additionally, developer Bit Reactor is to be collaborating with Respawn Entertainment on the third, unnamed tactics title. But, no mention of DICE’s involvement for a new Star Wars project.
Additionally, known leaker @_Tom_Henderson_ back in November also disclosed a similar fate for DICE at the time. It was said that Star Wars Battlefront III was originally pitched, however, the project was rejected. He also shared work was underway for two Star Wars titles ahead of Electronic Arts making the news official later in 2022.
Ultimately, DICE is currently occupied with Battlefield 2042 alongside a new Battlefield project as per @_Tom_Henderson_. Looking ahead for the current game, it is said that the firm is eyeing the opportunity for Battlefield 2042 to go free-to-play later down the road. You can read the full report by heading here.
