In February, it was reported that Niantic’s games business was up for acquisition. Today, Scopely announced that it has officially acquired Niantic’s games business for $3.5 billion. This means games like Monster Hunter Now, Pikmin Bloom, and of course Pokémon Go.
Other companion apps and services such as Campfire and Wayfarer were also part of the acquisition. Now that it’s been made official, Niantic’s entire games development team will also move to Scopely, which is led by Kei Kawai and Ed Wu.
“Scopely has always been focused on cultivating meaningful communities through a shared love of play, and the Niantic games organisation is one of the best in the world at this endeavour,” said Scopely chief revenue officer and board member Tim O’Brien.”
Niantic is launching its own technology platform, Niantic Spatial, which will be led by CEO John Hanke. The company will continue to operate Ingress Prime and Peridot.
