It is common knowledge that Sega is no longer in the console race. Despite the firm exiting the hardware competition, it is still aiming to capture the magic of its former glory. The recent new energy initiative was followed-up to reignite the Dreamcast’s alternative approach, Sega has confirmed. The firm even butted heads with Nintendo a little for its live-action trailer for Sonic Racing Crossworlds during the release for the game last year.

But, it is certain new hardware will likely not make a return. It was previously explained by Sega of America & Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi that the firm is not advancing on more retro mini consoles with its new plans internally. Additionally, it is even reported that Sega is pursuing a subscription business model for its library of titles as well.

In a recent development, it was revealed that Sega home console designer Hideki Sato has passed away. Sato is known for his work in the creation of Sega’s hardware from the SG-1000 to the Dreamcast. Sato also stood in as the President of Sega from 2001 to 2003. @Beep2021 on X first reported the Sato’s passing at the age of 75.

Also in a separate post on X, Sega itself also commemorated Sato’s death; reflecting on his career which stood from 1971 to 2008. “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hideki Sato, who served as President of SEGA from 2001 to 2003. SEGA would like to offer its condolences to his family and friends. […] His leadership helped lay the foundation of SEGA, and his contributions had a significant and lasting impact on the entire gaming industry.

“We will always remember his contributions to our company, and all of us at SEGA extend our deepest condolences as we honor his memory.” Similarly, the same impact was left with the previous passing of Kazuhisa Hashimoto back in 2020. Hashimoto was most recognized for his work developing the ‘Konami Code’. You can read the full report by heading here.
