Developer Atlus is on the their last batch of projects for this coming to an end generation as Persona 5 Royal hits shelves in Japan this Thursday with a Western release aimed for March next year; not to mention the separate Persona 5 Scramble which will hit both Nintendo’s and Sony’s hardware in Japan just a month before. However, while the new hardware has yet to properly be showcased yet, Atlus is already planning ahead.
Revealed in a recent interview on Dengeki PlayStation Vol. 681 on Ryokutya, Sega Director Toshihiro Nagoshi discusses that there is an upcoming project that the publisher has in the works with Atlus.
Atlus is in a phase where the company must create in a direction other than Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. Both Sega and Atlus are seriously working on new IP in anticipation of the new generation.
Speaking more on the approaching new wave of hardware for the next console generation, Nagoshi comments that upon Atlus branching from the studio’s billboard franchises, that the team would ultimately determine the new initiative being supported for what sells platform units. “Atlus can become an incredible platform holder.”
He follows by stating that “until now, that was the destiny for software because the generations have been focused on hardware. But that won’t be the case from now on.” And seeing what has played out between Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Nagoshi is not wrong to say that. Along with the addition of Nintendo Switch later in 2017, this continues to be supported that the software available on said unit is more of value than what is advertised of the console’s capabilities.
Do you agree with Nagoshi’s statement on this potnential new step for upcoming hardware?
