Years ago, the concept of film adaptations of video games and branching television series was a foreign concept with the prior understanding of the specific medium at the time. But with new projects that come out proving otherwise, it is embraced more than ever. One project that has yet to be realized is Metal Gear. Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts back in 2017 shared to be collaborating with Hideo Kojima on a film for the classic franchise.

However, details on the progress for the picture remains to be out of public sight. Of course, half a decade later and there is no sign of the movie even beginning. Instead, we’ve witnessed Sony Pictures greenlit other video game projects. Later this summer, Borderlands is to arrive to theaters. Another is The Legend of Zelda which is still in early production.

That’s not to mention the handful of other projects that were pushed forward and released from PlayStation Productions. In an interview with Brian Crecente, he spoke with Sony Pictures’ Avi Arad who confirmed that the film is still being pieced together internally. Understanding that Vogt-Roberts is still attached, Arad did explain the script remains a work-in-progress.

“We’re working on the script some more, but I can’t talk about it yet. I think everyone’s going to be really excited and surprised. […]These are just movies I want to make as good as possible, you know? I think getting Metal Gear right will obviously be amazing because I think it’s a lot more meditative than some of the other adaptations,” Arad answers if the project will exceed expectations for video game films. “Personally, I want it to be terrific.”

Previously, the picture did have a trend of bouncing between writers. In 2017, the project originally enlisted Jay Basu (Song of Songs) to pen the script. However, he was later replaced by Derek Connolly (Kong: Skull Island, Jurassic World, Detective Pikachu). Connolly is still credited as the writer for the Metal Gear film.

Elsewhere, Vogt-Roberts did spread his interest in other video game movies before. In that, he told IGN he is eager to tackle a Metroid film. He expressed that the approach would be handled similar to 2011’s Driver. You can read the full report by heading here.
