The sequel to Mossmouth’s landmark platformer was revealed by the developer, and this time around the game will have multiplayer.

Following the events of the original, Spelunky 2 will be a continuation of the gameplay and see some additional features that were absent in the first, such as rideable mounts and more in-depth levels.

As with its predecessor, the levels will generate with a path you have to follow in order to reach the exit. Another layer will be added to each level in the sequel, however, which will give players reason to retrace their footsteps, making the level more expansive than originally thought. Spelunky creator Derek Yu expanded on this new game feature:

Sometimes the entrance is right there and sometimes it’s a hidden shortcut. Even though the gameplay is still 2D platforming, this adds a feeling of a third dimension to the exploration.

Another game element that will be introduced is liquid effects. Flowing water and lava will add more life to the game as players travel underground, with the ability to create streams to better your chances against enemies and loot. This will certainly make for some interesting playthroughs when accompanied by a friend.

Also promised is an abundance of secrets hidden throughout the game that, when asked, Yu confirmed with an excited “oh, of course!”

Spelunky 2 is set to release in 2019 for PlayStation 4 and PC.
