This week brings Tango Gameworks’ latest vision to players with GhostWire: Tokyo. For those unfamiliar on the game, set in the heart titular Tokyo is where the scattered citizens vanish and ghostly ‘visitors’ inhabits the once bustling streets. In that, protagonist Akito is met with a spiritual being KK granting our hero powers to resolve this afterlife invasion.
Additionally, Tango Gameworks is also working on a separate project as well. Titled ‘Dice Hero’, this new board-style mobile title is coming to mobile in Japan and just this week was revealed to ship on March 31st. Elsewhere previously Tango Gameworks commented its next project is already in motion with The Evil Within 2 game director John Johannes involved.
When speaking with Famitsu recently, Tango Gameworks founder Shinji Mikami reveals that the team’s efforts moving forwards strives for titles alien to its current work. That includes shorter experiences and even focusing on projects outside of horror.
I hope to eventually change the image that Tango Gameworks currently has. At the moment, we are still seen as a studio that specialises only in survival horror. Of course, it’s nice to have fans think of us as a studio with a reputation for developing survival horror games. But we also want to be viewed as a studio that can create a wider variety of games. We will be releasing more and more new games in the future, starting with Ghostwire: Tokyo, so please give us your support.
More on the matters involving Johannes’ with a new, unnamed project is where Mikami explains the game is not a thrilling horror alike previous projects. “John Johanas, who directed the DLC for The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2, is working on a completely new title that is the complete opposite of horror,” he told Famitsu that Video Game Chronicles transcribed. “It’s a really good game, so keep your eyes peeled.
Mikami goes on to explain that the its latest GhostWire: Tokyo is not considered a horror title by his definition when compared to prior work under Tango Gameworks. “Ghostwire: Tokyo is not a horror game. It is an arcade-style action-adventure game. Even if I explained it like that, you might still be thinking, ‘No, after The Evil Within series?’ But it’s pure action, as you freely explore a deserted Tokyo while defeating enemies.”
Are you surprised by the direction Tango Gameworks is heading with its projects?
