These past couple of years have become monumental for Tetris as the game as grasped new audiences in new ways. First happened to be the Nintendo Switch exclusive battle royale Tetris 99. The title shipped as a free game for users who pick up any tier of the Nintendo Online Service for the platform, but later received physical versions that players can pick up through retail storefronts.
That same year in 2018 Tetris Effect happened. The virtual reality release offered the same puzzle stacking basis as Tetris 99 did, but still reinvented how the game was experienced. While the game is as you would expect, the visual flairs and jaw-dropping trip the game takes the player on is where the title received its acclaimed reputation.
Initially shipping for PlayStation VR, the game later arrived to PC in 2019 including HTV Vive and Oculus Rift on Epic Games Store. Now today, the game has officially launched for Oculus Quest.
“The original version of Tetris is nothing if not deceptively simple: Blocks fall from the top of the screen while players attempt to arrange them into solid lines as they hit the bottom,” the announcement post defines the game as. “The more lines created, the higher the score. Tetris Effect takes this basic formula and transforms it into an immersive art show that’s part puzzler and part roller coaster.”
Previously, Rectify Gaming deemed Tetris Effect to be one of the initial pioneering projects to redefine the connotation surrounding virtual reality experiences as being ‘one-time experiences’. “There’s nothing new to the already iconic formula of the game that makes Tetris Effect stand out, it’s how the game reacts that makes it so good,” the piece tells about Tetris Effect; which you can read in full by heading here.
