Although still living in its own capacity, The Elder Scrolls currently sits as players await the next mainline entry – The Elder Scrolls VI. In spring 2024, Bethesda did acknowledge that the title is progressing well for the series’ 30th anniversary. Additionally, other shocking news surrounding the project is that it might be Todd Howard’s last major release working at Bethesda, he addressed previously.

Now this week, a monumental individual responsible for The Elder Scrolls has passed. Lead developer Julian LeFay at the age of 59 passed on July 22nd. Through the Kickstater for his project The Wayward Realms, OnceLost Games announced the news with a post to “honor Julian LeFay’s legacy”.

“Julian Lefay was not just a colleague-he was a visionary who fundamentally shaped the gaming industry as we know it today. Known as the “Father of The Elder Scrolls”, Julian directed the creation of legendary titles including Elder Scrolls I & II: Arena, Daggerfall, and Battlespire. His pioneering work established the foundation for open-world RPGs and influenced countless developers and games that followed.”

The letterhead from the game studio continues: “At OnceLost Games, Julian was one of the masterminds behind The Wayward Realms, bringing decades of expertise and an unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of what RPGs could achieve. His technical brilliance, creative vision, and dedication to player agency have been the driving forces behind our ambitious project.”

In a separate statement from LeFay’s family, it reads: “After a long struggle with cancer my dad died peacefully on 22/7 at 22:43. He had so many things he wanted to say to the community and the fans, but as his time was cut short, he missed the opportunity. We spoke about it at length and I feel confident in telling you that the massive outpouring of support and love you showed for his work in general, and for the Wayward Realms was overwhelming and gave his life meaning. It truly meant the world to him to see what his spirit had inspired.

“He had faith in the collective effort of the team and the community around them to fulfill his vision, one which he had dreamed of for the entirety of his career and which wouldn’t be possible without the passion this team puts behind it, as well as their respect and love for him. This gave him the peace we all seek at the end of our lives. He was met with tremendous support through his final time and would spend a great deal of his final energy making sure that he could say his peace to the team, which they accepted with strength and care. It was touching and means the world to have witnessed it.”

What is your most memorable experience from LeFay’s work?
