Today, Microsoft announced major layoffs that have impacted at least 9,000 individuals across the company, including the Xbox gaming division. Part of the casualties today was The Initiative, who were developing Perfect Dark alongside Crystal Dynamics. Perfect Dark has also been confirmed to be canceled, and more information is being reported regarding that project.
It has been reported that the gameplay shown for Perfect Dark in a sizzle reel at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2024 was all fake. This is according to Twitter user @ethangach, who shared an article from Kotaku saying “The Perfect Dark sizzle reel at last year’s Xbox showcase looked awesome. Someone at the time also told me it was basically fake.”
It has been no secret that Perfect Dark was in a very rough state and had been in trouble. The Initiative brought in Crystal Dynamics to help with the development, but clearly it wasn’t enough to make the project a reality.
The Perfect Dark remake was announced in 2020, and last year was the first time we got a glimpse of the game. As always, we must take reports like this with a grain of salt, as there are a lot of rumors flying around with news like this.
We will wait for official word from Microsoft on this if they decide to comment on it.
