Although an anticipated addition to the PlayStation 5 ecosystem, the PlayStation VR 2 has remained a fairly mute release for the platform. Although anticipated to outdo the previous PlayStation VR on PlayStation 4, the latest peripheral has not shown to exceed its predecessor. In one report from Android Central, the virtual reality effort has been minimized internally at PlayStation Studios with two first-party projects in the pipeline.
Additionally, the system has been outshined by its more competitive competition. Meta’s Quest headsets remain to be the retail leader especially in 2023 where the PlayStation VR 2 only sold 10 percent of the Quest 2’s sales. Openly, PlayStation leadership has admitted that the virtual reality market has remained a problematic pursuit for Sony despite the momentum that the PlayStation 5 has maintained since its release.
In a new development this week, Sony Interactive Entertainment announces the PlayStation VR 2 is to ship with a new price tag. Instead of the initial $550 pricing that’s even more than the PlayStation 5 console itself, the PlayStation VR 2 is now being adjusted to an approachable $399.99 going forward. This also applies to the ‘PlayStation VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain Bundle’.
“For those of you who have been waiting for the opportunity to jump into PlayStation VR2 and experience what this generation’s innovative virtual reality system has to offer, we are happy to share some great news! Starting in March, we’re reducing the recommended retail price (RRP) of PS VR2. The starting date of the new prices and bundle availability may vary by country/region, so be sure to check your local retailer for details.”
Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis continues: “In addition, with a recent update to PS VR2, it now supports low-latency hand tracking, which allows developers to create games that tracks a player’s hand position and movement through the cameras embedded on the PS VR2 headset. Through this new feature, players will be able to experience intuitive controls in supported games such as Waltz of the Wizard.”
