While Sega has time & time again offered legacy support for its IPs with remasters for its franchises, it appears to remain a double-edged sword in that regard. When it came to Sonic Origins, we saw the original individual releases being stripped from storefronts then. And similarly the same can be said for select titles from other consoles as well as they were also ripped from gaming marketplaces too.
The most recent example is the widespread release for Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut. This version after outstaying its Nintendo Switch 2 release window was found to be the only version of the game as the original release would no longer be available for sale digitally. And now with the approaching release of Yakuza Kiwami 3 on the horizon this month, the same story is being retold.
On February 12th, Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties releases. Alongside a remake of the 2006 installment from Ryu Ga Gotoku, there will be a standalone campaign that follows antagonist Yoshitaka Mine. But, this will also be the cut off for purchasing Yakuza 3 Remastered, Sega reveals. While not fully removing the game, it will only be available for purchase via the ‘Yakuza Complete Series bundle’ on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam.
“With the release of Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties on February 12, 2026, the standalone digital version of Yakuza 3 will be discontinued as of 10:59 PM on February 11, 2026,” RGG Studios writes in the press release. “From February 12, 2026, the title will still be available for purchase as part of the Yakuza Complete Series bundle, available on the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Steam.”
While Sega has been active in this regard not to overlap its releases, it appears that does not apply to Atlus titles. Games like Persona 3 Portable & Persona 3 Reload are still available. And with the upcoming release for Persona 4 Revival, it is assumed this trend will continue for the developer as Persona 4 Golden will remain untouched also.
Are you surprised by this ongoing development by Sega?
