Sega To Delist Standalone Sonic Titles Ahead Of Sonic Origins Next Month

When exploring what possibilities that Sega could further expand the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, the team has yet to tally off a compilation of games for modern hardware. While the team has done it before for other platforms, the newest Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch has yet to get it. Thus brings us Sonic Origins which was announced back in June 2021.

However, Sega planned to bring the new project in 2022 which draws suspicions as to what will be included. This past week, Sega revealed Sonic Origins is slated to release on June 23 this summer. It was revealed the new collection will include HD remastering of the animations for each game alongside ‘Classic’ and ‘Anniversary’ modes for all titles as well.

But, Sega is making some questionable moves in anticipation for the new release. From a press release this week, Sega is preparing to delist Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD respectively for when Sonic Origins ships later in June. “SEGA announced today that the company will delist the digital versions of the stand-alone titles that will be featured in the upcoming game, Sonic Origins on May 20, 2022.

“This will include Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD. There are a couple of exceptions – Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 will remain available via SEGA AGES on the Nintendo Switch and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will still be playable via Sega Genesis on Nintendo Switch Online + [Expansion Pack].”

Although this is news for many regarding Sonic the Hedgehog, this is not the first instance a publisher made a similar move. With the release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition back in fall last year, Rockstar Games delisted Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on PC then.
