Since the unveiling for the new console generation back in late 2019, Microsoft’s emphasis on the Xbox Series X|S was its fast-loading now utilizing SSD for the internal hard drive. But for expandable storage, the Xbox firm took a versatile approach collaborating with Seagate to develop expansion cards for the new console to plug in. Of course, users can still take advantage of the USB ports as well to add storage too.

At release, the device only has options for 1 TB cards. However, with the growing lineup of games requiring more hard drive real estate, larger storage cards would be a necessity fairly soon. And by fall 2021, Microsoft shipped 512 GB & 2 TB cards as well. And now with the most recent price drop on the Seagate cards, other manufacturers are joining in on the market.

This week, Western Digital has rolled out its own WD_Black card for Xbox Series X|S. The new C50 Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S come in 512 GB ($79.99) and 1 TB ($149.99) options. You can watch the trailer in the video below:

“As game files get larger, the WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card for Xbox is the fast and easy way to give your Xbox Series X|S a big capacity boost and keep more titles installed. Just plug this officially licensed card directly into the console for similar performance as the Xbox internal storage. Included with your purchase is a 1-month membership of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with access to 100+ games on consoles and PC, plus online console multiplayer,” the description reads.

“The WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card for Xbox leverages the Xbox Velocity Architecture™ and delivers similar performance as your Xbox Series X|S internal storage for a seamless experience with all your favorite games. […] This officially licensed Xbox expansion card is plug-and-play with your Xbox Series X|S, so you don’t have to worry about compatibility or opening your console to install.

It continues, “Non-expansion card solutions require you to transfer games back and forth to your console. The WD_BLACK C50 Expansion Card for Xbox lets you get into the action faster so you can game when you want to. Suspend your current game, play a different game, then come back to the first game as if you never left. Only the Xbox console’s internal SSD and expansion cards can support this time-saving feature.”
