Among the noise of ongoing report concerning two mid-generation releases at Sony – PlayStation Slim & PlayStation Pro – the opposite is occurring at Microsoft. One interview with Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer expressed that the cards are not on the table – despite Spencer prior to launch emphasizing on iterating Xbox Series X|S then.
What comes at a larger surprise is the momentum that Microsoft continues to tout for its hardware and to remain in a standstill simultaneously. Recently, Spencer expressed the hardware to be twice as successful to its former Xbox 360 around the same time of that release. And while not a ‘Pro’ in itself, rumors recently surface disclosing work on a disc-less Xbox Series X is also being considered internally at Microsoft.
This week at Gamescom, Spencer spoke to IGN on the matter. During the conversation, Spencer reiterates on the absence of a mid-generation refresh for Xbox Series as the plan is focused on Xbox Series S and developers getting “the most of” current system specs.
But in terms of increased frame rate and increased resolution, I just look at what goes on on PC with high-end GPUs and high-end CPU, and it’s not always just about pixel count or frame resolution. I think there’s lighting techniques. There’s a bunch of things that go into what makes a game look and feel great. And we have a ton of headroom as an industry there.
“No, no. We’re focused right now on the increased storage Xbox Series S,” he elaborates when pressed on the an updated Xbox Series X|S. Continuing, “But no, like I said, we’re kind of at the end of the beginning in my mind. So I think we need to let devs settle on this hardware and get the most out of it.” Perhaps it is the value lost of production with the current systems already $200 out of Microsoft’s pocket currently.
Earlier this summer, the Xbox Series X faced a furthered price increase as the market extends its reach to more markets. Even more, Xbox Game Pass & Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also increased its pricing at the same time. You can read the full report by heading here.
What is your response to Spencer’s reasoning for no mid-gen Xbox Series X|S.
