Come later this October, Battlefield 6 is to launch bringing a new precedent to the franchise. From the open beta held previously, this new entry certainly does not hold back any punches. In the public playtest, the game outpaced Battlefield 2042’s Steam concurrent player count. Additionally, it was tallied that total players simultaneously accounted for over 500,000 at one point during the beta.

And with other aspects to hit Battlefield 6 in the future like a new battle royale mode, the amount of chaos to his the screen will be taxing. And with that concerns grow for select platforms. From Xbox, the Xbox Series S is certainly going to be an obstacle to overcome for DICE. But despite being significantly less powerful than the Xbox Series X, it is reported to sell 3:1 as of fall 2023.

Certainly the developer will want to deliver a playable experience to the majority of Xbox’s current-gen audience. When speaking to Kotaku, Battlefield 6 technical director Christian Buhl explained that the Xbox Series S was a hurdle in the game’s development. But, that this was a speed bump which the team used to better optimize the game as a whole.

“I will say that the biggest thing we did that was a challenge for us was [dealing with the console’s limited] memory. Xbox Series S does have less memory than even our mid-spec PC. And so there was a point…Oh, I want to say, like, 6 to 12 months ago where we kind of realized that a lot of our levels were crashing on Xbox Series S.”

Buhl further elaborated that fine tuning the game with Xbox Series S in mind has resulted in Battlefield 6 playing “better and more stable” alongside also having “specific optimizations” aimed only for Series S. “Once we kind of started running all our levels through it, and were able to see where the problems were, after a month or two, we had kind of resolved all of our memory issues on Series S.”

Are you surprised the turnaround that DICE managed for Battlefield 6 due to the Xbox Series S?
