In the most obvious string of events, there has been several changes to Xbox in the recent year. Probably the most spoken of is its effort to ship more of its title on other hardware outside of its ecosystem. Additionally, there is also the push for its more integrated portal on PC as well. Originally, Microsoft was ushering in ‘Xbox PC’ at the start of the summer.

Since then, the decision has also led to third-party storefronts being compatible with the PC app to view & launch your titles via Steam and other launchers. But, it was hardly a month before discovering it would be rebranding to ‘Xbox on PC’ as of the past week or so. And while change is always welcomed, it would be appreciated if the Xbox firm stuck to one decision.

And although it is not given much choice, Microsoft is submitting to a new law rolling out from Parliament in the United Kingdom. As part of the UK Online Safety Act, Microsoft announces that prompts for users in the region are to soon be sent out as age verification will be mandatory on its platform as part of its compliance.

“Age verification will be required for these players in the UK to retain full access to social features on Xbox, such as voice or text communication and game invites. Players who don’t verify their age between now and early 2026 can continue to play and enjoy Xbox,” Xbox gaming trust & safety vice president Kim Kunes explains.

“However, starting early next year, their use of social features on Xbox will become limited to friends only until they complete the age verification process. Whether a player verifies their age will not affect any previous purchases, entitlements, gameplay history, achievements, or the ability to play and purchase games, however we encourage players to verify their age via this one-time process now to ensure uninterrupted use of social features on Xbox in the future.”

Of age users in the UK can register now for age verification process. “The information players provide during the age verification process is protected with industry-standard encryption and is not stored or used for any other purpose,” the post elaborates.
