The Resident Evil IP continues to reach new heights no matter what releases for the IP. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the ninth installment – Resident Evil Requiem – is set to release later this winter in February 2026. In a more recent announcement, it was also confirmed that Nintendo Switch 2 will also be joining the release as well next year.
As for other efforts regarding the franchise, a new Resident Evil movie is coming. This time, Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) is to take the helm as the director. With his low budget approach and emphasis on environment storytelling, there is for sure a new perspective that is welcome to take a knock at the series. It was also confirmed that the film is aiming to release in September 2026.
So when filming begins should be coming up. What has been confirmed is the casting for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film. From The Hollywood Reporter, Zach Cherry (Severance), Kali Reis (True Detective), and Johnno Wilson (I Love That for You) have all been confirmed to be in Resident Evil. Austin Abrams, who was also casted in Cregger’s Weapons earlier this year is to also be taking a leading role in Resident Evil.
While information on the plot is still light, Cregger has expressed that the film will feature an original story separate from the games. “It’s an entirely original story,” Cregger told Entertainment Weekly. “When you watch it, you’ll be like, ‘This is very Zach.’ It’s just [that] it takes place in the Resident Evil world. I don’t think fans of the games are gonna be bummed.”
Similarly, this is not the first instance that a popular IP took a different route that was not aligned with the source’s plot. Last year, Amazon Prime released Like a Dragon: Yakuza and it was confirmed that the story path would stray from the original plot and even feature different characterization for Kazuma Kiryu.
