We are already well into this new decade kicking off 2020 as the first week is already behind us. And with still plenty of time ahead of us for the remainder of the year, Microsoft has some news regarding their 2018 released tile, Sea of thieves. Announcing that the first-person, pirate adventure has accumulated 10 million players since the game’s launch nearly two year ago.
In celebration of this new achievement, Rare Executive Producer Joe Neate made a post to acknowledge this new milestone for the growing title.
We’re excited and humbled to share that Sea of Thieves has now been played by more than ten million players, reinforcing its status as the most successful new IP from Xbox this generation.
The title truly has come a long way seeing the initial reception before the game officially released. Originally, Sea of Thieves went under the radar for quite some time following the first reveal in 2015 as the game made itself at home in alpha/beta testing and illustrated to do just that for roughly two years. Then upon the game’s launch showed quite a palette of new experiences, but lacked in content that many would rank right next to No Man’s Sky excluding the lies that were promised from Sean Murray.
However, Rare went back to the drawing board to develop new ways to resolve the initial issues for Sea of Thieves through free content updates and drawn out roadmaps for promising content to fish in returning players. Excitingly, Rare revealed right before the transition to 2019 that the developing pirate experience would be receiving a bundle of story content throughout the course of the arriving year.
Now just a year later, the game has achieved quite a monumental goal for the overall generation that no other new intellectual property on the Xbox One platform has managed to do. To thank the community, Neata announces that between January 15 to January 21, players who log onto the game will receive a specialized custom sails and emote for the special occasion.
Back in September, it was revealed following the release of Gears 5 that the new installment swiftly became the most successful title for an ongoing series under Microsoft’s repertoire as more than 3 million users installed the game within the first week of releasing. It is suspected that this was primarily achieved thanks to the game’s accessibility via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate which was on sale for $2 at the time.
