As of recent, video game translated films have slowly began to take the industry by storm. With the 2019 release of Detective Pikachu followed by this year’s Sonic the Hedgehog back in February, it is expected the trend will continue forward as more hand get in the pot with other recognized franchises. As for the current successes, it is already known that the film starring Sega’s Blue Blur will be receiving a follow-up entry later in 2022.

But for new properties to hit the silver screen, one happens to be Capcom’s Mega Man. It was reported back in 2018 that the project was picked up by the duo comprised of Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman who are responsible for Paranormal Activity 3 and Paranormal Activity 4. Howbeit, the team has not been very vocal about the production since its initial conception.

But with the addition of writer Mattson Tomlin, who worked on Project Power with the duo, he does spare new details on the premise of the film. While only being added to the project fairly recently, he does share to grasp understanding as to where the production will head for the Mega Man film.

My way into it was always, what is a compelling story? And what is the real soul of that character? We all kind of know him as this cartoonish Blue Bomber who jumps and shoots, and to kind of go beyond that and knowing that, OK, visually it’s going to be a certain thing that is going to please the video game fan, but you know what is the story at the center? They’re like, what is it that this character can really go through?

It’ll be universal and primal and emotional and everybody can kind of relate to. So I’m really excited about that script. I’m really excited about what the guys are going to do with that movie and and hopefully there’ll be some news about it soon.

Regarding the demographic that the newly formed trio is set to aim for, it is more ambiguous. Mattson explains that while it is a feature that many younger fans are sure to like, it will also appeal to its older following as well. “I think it’s something that the kids will like. I don’t want to say what our comps are because it might betray a little bit too much, but it is not squarely in the kid territory. But I don’t think that that’s an R-rated movie either.”

Elsewhere, Capcom also has another theatrical release scheduled for the box office in the coming future from another prolific series. With that being the Monster Hunter franchise, the project is expected to ship in the coming months. It was reported recently that the production would be pushed to its debut to sometime in 2021. What are you hoping will arise from the Mega Man film?
