Yesterday, publisher Sega & developer Team Sonic held its first installment of Sonic Central which issued an abundance of Sonic the Hedgehog-related reveals and answered the cries for fans worried about the coming future for the series. Ending the showcase, Team Sonic head Takashi Iizuka teased the next mainline entry for the franchise.

Although little details were offered in regards to what the new game will be about nor expressed even an official title for the release, the biggest surprise happened to be the new release window now aimed for 2022. Following, users online such as @PTKickass on Twitter posted metadata from the trailer which listed the project to be ‘Sonic Rangers’ in multiple instances of the code.

Additionally, there also happened to be a string of details including the name that appeared over on 4Chan months prior that appears to corroborate with the title. Although Sega has yet to address what the new game will be, Fanbyte News Editor Imran Khan reposted the thread backing the claim made back in January.

From Eurogamer, Sega in a press release offered the new, untitled Sonic the Hedgehog game to be dubbed ‘Sonic Rangers’ as well. “Announcing new console experiences, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Sonic Rangers, further details on Netflix’s Sonic Prime, mobile news, musical events and much more!” But, the latest version of the press release now removed the title of the game entirely.

More so on the matter of the 4Chan thread, it is disclosed that the new game is to feature an open-world environment for players to explore when playing Sonic. Additionally, puzzles and challenges will be littered across the world and players can progress with an upgradable skill tree. Most interesting is the ‘Cyberspace’ portion of the game which is unlocked by obtaining orbs and transitions to Sonic Generations-like levels, the post adds.

In terms of Sonic the Hedgehog outside of Sonic Rangers, developer Team Sonic is shipping Sonic Colors: Ultimate this September. Alongside a remaster of the 2010 title, the firm is also preparing a two-part animated cartoon based on the game – Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps.

By extension, the segment of the show also featured voice actor Roger Craig Smith. After a decade of voicing Sonic the Hedgehog, Smith announced to be retiring from the role. But this Wednesday, Smith revealed he will be returning to the character for future projects. You can read the full report by heading here.
