For years, the Harry Potter series has been on ice when it comes to video games. Although Niantic did roll out Harry Potter: Wizards Unite – an augmented reality, mobile experience – it was closed back in 2022. But with the original films out already a decade prior, a new video game has been well overdue. Everything appeared to be changing with the new Hogwarts Legacy that released earlier this year.
And it proved to be a major success. Ahead of release, there were already milestones shattered thanks to the early access for the game when players pre-ordered the game. Even more, our review for the game reflected the immersion this new title delivered. “Players looking for a great action RPG and magical stories will love Hogwarts Legacy,” critic Michael Merchant wrote.
In a recent report from NPD Group Mat Piscatella, the game tails behind the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in sales for November 2023; the same month the FPS launched. Not to mention Hogwarts Legacy already being available since February, this is a major feat. Now, it is possibly up to overtaking the first spot for US sales potentially.
For roughly 15 years, Call of Duty has remained a juggernaut seller in the US with roughly a dozen of its releases ranked in the top 20 sellers for the 2010s. This is, of course, shared along with Rockstar Games with titles Grand Theft Auto V & Red Dead Redemption II. Other surprising sale metrics this year also includes the overtake by Starfield compared to EA FC 24 back in September.
Regarding Hogwarts Legacy, a sequel is reportedly in the works. According to @MyTimeToShineHello on X, sources tell the leaker that work has already commenced on the Harry Potter spin-off title. You can read the full report by heading here.
