When I was a kid, bedtime meant one thing: shadow puppet theater. I’d twist my fingers into makeshift bunnies, dragons, and dinosaurs, casting their silhouettes onto the wall with a flashlight. I’d giggle under the covers, narrating epic tales of heroism and mischief, all played out in flickering shadows. Those simple moments of imagination and connection are etched into my memory.

So when I stumbled upon Projected Dreams, a cozy puzzle game that revolves around shadow play and childhood nostalgia, I was instantly intrigued. Developed by Flawberry Studio, this game invites players into the world of Senka, a young girl who discovers her mother’s old photo album. Using toys and objects from her room, Senka recreates the silhouettes from these photos, unraveling a wordless narrative of family, friendship, and the bittersweet passage of time.

Each puzzle presents a blurry photograph, and it’s up to you to manipulate toys—ranging from nostalgic 90s items like Game Boys and Rubik’s Cubes to generic blocks and figurines—to match the shadow outline on the wall. The mechanics are intuitive: rotate, stack, and position objects until the desired silhouette emerges. What sets this game apart is its allowance for creativity; there isn’t just one solution, encouraging players to think outside the box.

As you progress, Senka’s room transforms, reflecting different themes and eras, from Halloween nights to underwater adventures. The evolving environment keeps the experience fresh and engaging, inviting players to explore and discover hidden cassette tapes that unlock soothing tracks composed by Floris Demandt.

The puzzles strike a delightful balance between challenge and relaxation. While some may find the physics a tad finicky—objects occasionally topple or don’t align perfectly—the game is forgiving. You’re graded on a three-heart system, but even a single heart allows you to progress, ensuring that frustration doesn’t overshadow enjoyment. This design choice makes Projected Dreams accessible to both casual gamers and puzzle enthusiasts.

Visually, the game is a treat. The soft, warm color palette evokes a sense of comfort, and the attention to detail in the room’s decor and toys adds depth to the nostalgic atmosphere. The absence of dialogue enhances the storytelling, allowing players to project their own emotions and interpretations onto Senka’s journey. Combined with the ambient soundtrack, the game creates an immersive experience that feels both personal and universal.

Projected Dreams is a heartfelt homage to the power of imagination and the bonds that tie us to our past. It’s a gentle reminder of the joy found in simple pleasures, like casting shadows on a wall and weaving stories from the shapes that emerge. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing gaming experience or a trip down memory lane, Projected Dreams offers a cozy escape into a world where shadows tell the most illuminating stories.
