Arguably, the PlayStation 5 sits as the most popular console this current hardware generation. While the Nintendo Switch 2 is still in its infancy, the Xbox Series X|S has remained well behind the release campaign of its competitor. As of this summer, the PlayStation 5 has shipped over 80 million units globally. In the height of a changing economy, Sony is chasing other business models atop its ongoing success.
Previously, it was revealed that the PlayStation firm is to further pursue its effort in live-service. Despite fallouts like canceled Horizon MMO & Concord, Sony is adamant to remain in support of the approach. Additionally, it was also stated around the same time that PlayStation is eager to explore a ‘platform-centric’ mindset for its brand rather than console-focused as it has done leading up to now.
There have been job listings which pointed towards internal initiatives to push for more games on exterior hardware from both Nintendo & Microsoft. As for the overall trajectory acquired by PlayStation 5, Sony deems it the most successful generation for it. At Tokyo Game Show, via Geoff Keighley on X, CEO Hideaki Nishino touted the success for PlayStation 5 exceeds all prior generations.
Looking closer at the chart behind Nishino, it illustrates that the PlayStation 5 is already the top grossing console from Sony. However, the metrics do not go into detail on the exact differences in consoles moved. After the tail end of its lifecycle, the PlayStation 4 has sold over 116 million units. So although generating more financially, it has yet to sell past its predecessor yet for PlayStation 5.
Recently, a report from The Game Business has put the spotlight on consoles this generation. While prices continue to climb as platform holders celebrate brand milestones, things are not moving as fast as it appears. PlayStation alongside Xbox both are still fighting to comp momentum of the prior generation. You can read the full report by heading here.
