Just this month, Treyarch arrived with the launch for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. “Every year a new Call of Duty feels like a mini holiday to the core audience who are dedicated fans, and they know a lot of us will continue to buy it. Is that necessarily bad? No, not really. Can it be better? Absolutely,” our review for the latest Call of Duty reads.

However, this game is different than prior releases. In a very apparent response to Battlefield 6, skilled based matchmaking has been adjusted after outcry spanning years from its community. But, the leadership now under Xbox is also to be considered too. Former Sledgehammer Games head Glen Schofield expressed worry for the IP similar to concerns already for Halo & Gears of War.

Now more than a week following the game’s launch, market response to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is well behind the previous Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. According to The Game Business via GSD revealed that performance is less than half compared to its 2024 predecessor. Official metrics gathered reveals that Black Ops 7 sold 60 percent less to Black Ops 6. The game also undershot about 63 percent for Battlefield 6 sales too.

In regard to the competing Battlefield 6, the game has sold roughly 7 million units within its first week. And still in the holiday season will likely see further progression commercially well towards the end of December. Although sales for Call of Duty is significantly less this year, it should be considered that it launched on Xbox Game Pass which does not insist the game is short on active players exactly.

But, what is understood is that gross revenue is sacrificed to fuel the business model. Recently, it was reported that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 faced a $300 million decline with the inclusion of it on Xbox Game Pass when released in 2024. You can read the full report by heading here.

How surprised are you for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 performance?

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is out now for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
