This year, Activision & Treyarch has bestowed gaming with Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. In our review, we scored the title an 8/10. “Black Ops 7 is still a very fun and new content-filled game even if it’s like the others in some ways, and each year I’ll always end up right back where I started.” However, there has been several hurdles the game has faced since its release.
One of the biggest gripes that the game has addressed is its skill-based matchmaking. Appearing to be reactionary to the launch of Battlefield 6, the change was said to drastically impact how players queue into multiplayer lobbies. But, the biggest pushback was the creative decision for the new game. As a result, it was revealed that new entries moving forward will not offer back-to-back releases for its multiple series.
And while many were expecting to see that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is not performing alike prior releases – as shown on Steam Charts – the same cannot be said for Xbox Game Pass. Via an X post, the official Game Pass account confirmed that the title within a few weeks of releasing was already the service’s most-played franchise for 2025.
Of course, reaching such a milestone, the game was also ranked the #1 title for November as well. However, despite the highs in Microsoft’s own regards, the title did fall well behind in sales as per records in Europe. By extension, this will also play into the losses that Black Ops 6 was faced with as the game’s addition to Game Pass did lead to a $300 million deficit in its release cycle.
Elsewhere, Microsoft also crowned a separate title for its popularity on Xbox Game Pass. In that, it was revealed that the most-popular third-party release for Game Pass was Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. You can read the full report by heading here.
