Microsoft Confirms Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is Game Pass’ Biggest Third-Party Release For The Service

Leading up to the release for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, it was understood that the game stood out among other releases in 2025. And now more than half a year later, it has already sold more than 4 million copies. Not to mention the game being a launch title on Xbox Game Pass, the audience reached deepens. Developer Sandfall Interactive confirmed that free content is on the way for the base game sometime later next year.

In the same interview, the team also addressed a sequel is underway. Previously, the French game studio addressed that plans for a larger franchise is the main goal for the IP seeing the sweeping success for the first title. And with glowing responses also comes other opportunities like a film adaptation already in motion at Story Kitchen for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Recently, Microsoft spoke on the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 confirming that the independent AAA release is the most successful third-party release on Xbox Game Pass this year. Previously, Squanch Games’ High on Life was touted the most popular on the platform during its release in 2022.

Once we played early builds, we experienced their gripping story, stunning visuals and the mix of JRPG mechanics with French cultural themes that felt fresh and distinctive.
