The current DNA structure of Tango Gameworks is not what it once was. Back in 2023, studio founder Shinji Mikami announced that he would be departing from the developer in the following months. Mikami went on to form a new studio, Unbound. By April of this year, it was revealed that Unbound would be acquired as part of a subsidiary of Stellar Blades’ Shift Up Corp. moving forward.
The identity of Tango Gameworks has also been put into question as well around the same time after the new ownership was purchased by Krafton following the Microsoft closure in 2024. Another all-star that exited Tango Gameworks was Ikumi Nakamura. The bubbly persona of the GhostWire: Tokyo development team went on to form a new studio as well under the alias Unseen in 2022.
Now this week at the PlayStation State of Play, Nakamura revealed Kemuri. The game is currently listed for PlayStation 5 with a release window set for next year. You can watch the announcement trailer in the video below:
“Yokai hunters from across the globe gather in this city. Each carrying their own culture, past, and personal loss, they arrive in Kemuri City for their own reasons. Perhaps… just like you, standing on the edge of this world now,” the synopsis reads. “As a yokai hunter, players search for yokai, form contracts with them, and grow stronger by wielding their powers. There is no single way to fight. Some hunters charge into close combat, others strike from a distance, while some wield supernatural powers through prayers and talismans. Each hunter steps into the city’s paranormal anomalies in their own way.”
Nakamura expands on the setting of Kemuri City: “Kemuri City is a place said to be “where you may encounter something you once lost again.” It exists on the boundary between life and death. Dangerous, yet strangely alluring, the city has become an unusual tourist destination visited by people from around the world. Across its layered rooftops, alleyways, and underground ruins, the line between reality and the afterlife constantly shifts and trembles. In this city, paranormal phenomena are simply part of everyday life.”
