Ubisoft is somehow in hot water again with the Far Cry series, this time the cover of Far Cry 5 is under fire from a conservative petitioner on Change.org (website is undergoing a server upgrade at the time of this writing).
This petitioner somehow believes the cover of Far Cry 5 has a discriminatory tone towards Americans. One of the highlighted quotes thus reads:
“Change the villains. It’s not so hard, really. Just change the villains to something more realistic. Islam is on the rise in America, as is the violence of inner city gangs. Are you scared to do so? In the words of Boltair – “To learn who rules you, simply find out who’s not being criticized.”
Certainly, the writer means “Voltaire” and not “Boltair”.
In terms of realism, the Far Cry series is never known to be that, like the GTA series. It aims to be over-the-top, and is not willing to pull punches toward any side.
Perhaps this petitioner missed the “controversy” of Far Cry 4 when the cover was criticized for being “racist” towards minorities.
While people on both sides do have a right to an opinion, it would be much easier if they let their wallets do the talking by not purchasing the game, because it doesn’t look like Ubisoft will change the cover anytime soon.
