This past February might have felt forever ago when we talk about Respawn Entertainment’s Apex Legends: at the time, the game was a new take on the battle royale genre when we were convinced only PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite were the only two to be what defines the growingly popular game type. But the title instead redefined some of the then-current problems the two competing titles had with a Titanfall-infused twist that helped make the game stood out.

Upon the game’s swift growing population on EA’s servers, it was reported that the title accumulated an estimated 25 million users within its first week of going live; and making things more interesting, nearly one third of a million were cheaters who were later faced with bans from Respawn’s latest project.

Bow according to the latest Q2 financial report for publisher Electronic Arts, it was revealed that the game from February to this week has reached more than 70 million users since the game’s sudden launch. Respawn Entertainment went to Twitter to address the achievement with a celebratory tweet.

Impressive to see that the game has ranked more than nearly three times the population of Australia, this feat is even more eye opening seeing how little Respawn or EA has advertised the game. Prior to the game’s debut, Apex Legends was only a rumor at the time with no definite detail to confirm to be true or not. But the following week Respawn Entertainment announced and simultaneously dropped the title for free.

Atop of the game being available to the masses and only receiving influencer credibility through paid streamers the same day of launch, the title has come a long way compared to how PUBG or Fortnite earned its popularity as a battle royale. Witnessing now three content seasons, counting five limited time events, and sufficient amounts of patches have kept Apex Legends to stand tall among other games.

Following the launch of Apex Legends in February, I shared my first taste of the battle royale genre and my excitement towards anticipating what will come from this project. Noted, the team at Respawn behind Apex s comprised of former Call of Duty developers and the addition of selected developers who worked on Halo 3 & Halo Reach, this only lead to how well the game came in its reception.

Apex Legends is out now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
