Final Fantasy 7 Remake was further revealed at The PlayStation Experience this past weekend with a new trailer as well as being officially confirmed for Xbox One – There were just leaks previously. Some new details have come out afterwards thanks to an interview with Dengaki Online/Gematsu over the weekend as well.
According to the interview, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is going to be split up into multiple parts. Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Director Tetsuya Nomura elaborated by saying
Kitase: “The idea that a remake of Final Fantasy VII would not fit into a single release was there from the very beginning. We still can’t share more information about its multiple parts, but please look forward to future announcements.”
Nomura: “If we dedicated our time to a single release, parts of it would become summarized. We’d have to cut some parts, and additional parts would come in few, so rather than remake the game as a full volume, we decided to do multiple parts.”
Both also revealed that the game would utilize an active battle system rather than the classic turn based system many are used to. Now, on first glance, this seems acceptable as many games are much larger nowadays then their original over a decade ago. On the other hand, Final Fantasy 7 original could fit on a single disc so why can’t PS4, in all its power, not hold Final Fantasy 7 Remake on a single disc?
If a game that has been clamored for for such a long time is changed to the point that it needs this much more space, you run the risk of altering what players love most about the game itself. We’ll have to see more as details are released but for now, it seems the emotion of finally getting the remake may wear off very quickly due to these modern day changes Square Enix is infusing into the game. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
