It was nearly one month ago that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a State of Emergency for the nation and closed all business non-essential to remain open. In effect to this executive order, the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO), Japan’s respected ESRB (North America) or PEGI (Europe) would be closed for an entire month and no future software could be rated throughout the duration.

With that, it would be expected that planned releases of upcoming projects could receive impeded arrival due to the decision made by government officials. The decision solely comes from the swelling COVID-19 outbreak that has continued to choke hold most global markets and society in general. However, the closure is finally on its last breath this week.

The organization made a statement today sharing that operations will pick up momentum once again on May 7 this coming Thursday.

The Computer Entertainment Rating Organization was temporarily closed in response to a shelter-in-place request from the governor of Tokyo and a state of emergency declared in response to the novel coronavirus, but upon strengthening our infection prevention measures for employees and examiners, business will resume on May 7.

This situation happened to be a major concern for upcoming anticipated titles around the corner for 2020. For instance Cyberpunk 2077: during CD Projekt Red’s recent webcast, the studio was pressed on ratings in the region. CEO Adam Kiciński explained that CD Projekt Red managed to obtain majority of ratings globally prior to the closure in Japan.

While not a direct response to the property, the closure did affect PlatinumGames dramatically with the upcoming release of The Wonderful 101: Remastered. Recently, the studio shared that all physical versions that backers donated for the game’s Kickstarter campaign will not be delivered until late June. You can read the full report by heading here.

Do you think the closure put into place was a necessary move for Japan?
