It is no secret that Grand Theft Auto VI is likely the most anticipated release of the decade. With more than a decade since the last installment, fans globally are awaiting to reach the launch date for the new title. Just in viewership alone for its trailers, it shows the demand. The first trailer accumulated over 90 million views in a single day. The second went on to generate 40 million in less than a day as well.

Previously, parent company Take-Two Interactive has been vocal on when Grand Theft Auto VI is releasing; adamant on the fall-aimed release date initially set. But, the firm eventually delayed the title to May 2026. And while the prolonged wait was expected then, Rockstar Games continued to push their users once again. Recently, it was confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI is now rescheduled to launch in November 2026: just over a full year from now.

What is more damning is that there has also been a number of layoffs at the developer too. According to Bloomberg, the 30+ employees let got were part of an internal investigation which concluded to be attached to a string of individuals responsible for leaking details. In a statement to Bloomberg, a spokesperson for Rockstar Games said:

“Last week, we took action against a small number of individuals who were found to be distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a violation of our company policies. This was in no way related to people’s right to join a union or engage in union activities.” Although Rockstar Games feels just on the reasoning for the decision, there is pushback on its actions.

The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) revealed that the decision made by the GTA developer is unjust and an illegitimate reason for the firings. In a statement to Eurogamer, the coalition wrote: “Despite our representation and attempts to meet with Rockstar to resolve the matter through negotiation, Rockstar have declined and persisted to terminate members of the union in a manner that is unacceptable and unlawful.”

It continues: “We are representing employees who were dismissed by Rockstar Games in circumstances that we believe amount to victimisation and collective dismissal linked to trade union activity. […] Accordingly, we have now issued formal legal claims against Rockstar on behalf of the Claimants.” The reasoning for the legal action follows Rockstar Games not complying to meet with IWGB and plans to make an example of these behaviors from large publishers.

“This case stands as a warning to any employer in the games industry and beyond who thinks they are able to act with impunity against organised workers – we will not be intimidated,” IWGB president Alex Marshall says. “We are confident that what we’ve seen here is plain and simple union busting, and we will mount a full legal defence with our expert group of caseworkers, legal officers and barristers.”
