This past week, developer Remedy Entertainment has been taking up the airwaves as it announces the second story expansion for 2019’s Control. Properly unveiling AWE, the second add-on experience furthers the enigmatic experience of the super natural within the Bureau with a new entity to hone its attention towards. In that, the narrative follows the occurrence in Bright Falls, the setting where 2010’s Alan Wake took place.

Effectively connecting the two stories, Remedy Entertainment could further expand on the series to answer questions that were left lingering for just over a decade now. And while the firm is also sitting on other entities such as Max Payne and Quantum Break, the team only managed to bridge with Alan Wake is due to reacquiring the rights for the series just last July.

Reiterating on more details for the current Control, Remedy Entertainment announces that the title will be receiving a Ultimate Edition which will offer the two add-on campaigns in one package. In the blog post announcing the new version, Remedy Entertainment also told that users who purchase the Ultimate Edition on current systems can expect it on the newer hardware arriving later this year.

What if I purchased the original version of Control previously?

The free upgrade path to Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 version of Control is only available for Control Ultimate Edition.

Yes, you are reading that correctly: while owners of the newer version for Control will be able to transition to next-generation consoles with the title, current holders of the game are inadequate of doing the same. While Remedy Entertainment has disclosed to be shipping an updated version for the coming consoles, the developer did not expand on the possibility of cross-but at the time.

While it was presumed that initiatives like Smart Delivery would assist Xbox Series X users with Control, that looks to be unlikely now. And the same can also be said for PlayStation 5 players if even Sony’s marketing agreement with Remedy Entertainment cannot save users from having to purchase the game again. Howbeit, there is the possibility for direct backwards compatibility on Microsoft’s unit as a loophole for the issue. It is currently undetermined if the same could be suspected on PlayStation 5 with its backwards compatibility approach.

What are your thoughts on the Ultimate Edition for Control?

Control Ultimate Edition is hitting Steam on August 27, 2020; arrives to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Epic Games Store on September 10, 2020.
