One of the most anticipated releases on PlayStation 4 at the time was Days Gone. The newest release from Syphon Filter developer Bend Studio offered a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse genre with a broad open-world and dense population of the living dead. However, the response of the game commercially did not leave much in favor for the IP. Former studio lead Jeff Ross explained that its poor performance resulted in the series being exempt from a sequel.
In a separate interview, creative director John Garvin elaborated on the severity of Metacritic to Sony. And based off of the reception for Days Gone, it was virtually apparent that more from the series would be on halt indefinitely, he expressed. What’s more, David Jaffe when speaking to Ross shared that the exit of Shawn Layden was the last nail in the coffin for any chances of a new game for the series.
Recently, word broke out that new games are still underway – hence the long wait from Bend Studio. Some claims indicate that a sequel and potentially a third game for Days Gone was in active development at Bend Studio. However, that is far from the truth. In fact, community manager Kevin McAllister encourages to drop any hope as he confirms the next game is a new IP.
“I apologize to our Days Gone community for continuously getting fed false hope and poor information by people looking for likes. It’s not fair to you all. We are currently working on a new IP, and when we have actual news to share it will come from our studio.” In a separate response, he added, “All these type of headlines originate from previous developers, which puts us in a bad position. Like I said, people need likes. Time to move on.”
Although there is no official word on the next game as of yet, you can read Rectify Gaming’s review for Days Gone upon its release on PC. “Whether you dabbled in Days Gone previously and want to give it a second chance, or diving into the world for the first time. The PC port of Days Gone is a solid experience.” You can read the full review by heading here.
