One of the most shattering announcements in the past for gaming happened to be the retirement of beloved President of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime. In 2019, he stepped down from his role and later went on to consult with GameStop on its board of directors. Succeeding Fils-Aime was Doug Bowser: his tenure at Nintendo kicked off in 2015 which swung the door open to him becoming senior vice president before his current role.
Bowser worked during the latter swing for the Nintendo Switch as the system went on to sell over 150 million units. He also was part of the pivotal release of the Nintendo Switch 2. That arrived earlier this summer. Already, it outsold the PlayStation 2 in the first month – a milestone not to be shrugged. Additionally, the system has seen over 6 million units sold in its first two months thus far.
And as momentum is still to continue climbing for the Nintendo Switch 2, Doug Bowser has announced his retirement and will be exiting Nintendo of America by 2026. In his succession, Bowser will be replaced by Devon Pritchard. Alongside nearly two decades in the industry, he will be accompanied by Satoru Shibata who will be the standing chief executive officer after the transition.
“One of my earliest video game experiences was playing the arcade version of Donkey Kong,” said Bowser. “Since that time, all things Nintendo have continued to be a passion for both me and my family. Leading Nintendo of America has been the honor of a lifetime, and I am proud of what our team has accomplished in both business results and the experiences we’ve created for consumers,” Bowser says in a statement.
“Now, it’s time for the next generation of leadership and Devon’s track record speaks for itself. She is an exceptional leader, and her promotion is a testament to her strong performance and strategic contributions to the company’s growth. I have full confidence that she will guide the company to even greater heights.”
Pritchard added in her own statement: “I am humbled and excited to take on this new role,” said Pritchard. “Doug has been a fantastic mentor, and I look forward to building on the incredible foundation he has helped establish. With characters and worlds that offer something for everyone, my focus will be continuing to build on Nintendo’s legacy of surprising and delighting our longtime fans, while at the same time welcoming new players into the Nintendo family.”
Are you surprised by this new change of leadership for Nintendo of America so early into the Nintendo Switch 2 lifespan?
