Every year, the select events & showcases that arrive to avid players bring excitement with the announcements that are packaged in the show. For this year, Gamescom Opening Night Live was no exception in ramping up anticipation for what the video game industry has to offer from AAA projects to new indie-level games as well.
Some of the reveals from this mixed bag included the likes of Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country, Masters of Albion, Revenge of the Savage Planet, Dying Light: The Beast, Directive 8020, Squid Games: Unleashed, and even Amazon Prime’s Secret Level. Of course, chatter behind these announcements also indicate that viewership is expected to also be higher than ever.
According to host Geoff Keighley, 2024’s Gamescom Opening Night Live broke new records. The show this past week was met with over 40 million video views – a milestone that doubles the engagement from 2023. Additionally, the attendance for Gamescom also increased from 320,000 to 335,000 this year.
Last year was no different then as well. In 2023, Keighley revealed that Gamescom Opening Night Live viewership was also on an incline at the time then. Compared to viewership of its 2022 Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, viewership for the annual presentation increased by 66 percent. And now 2024 even outperforms the prior milestone made.
Looking forward, Keighley has confirmed the date for The Game Awards. The annual awards ceremony will be coming later this December 12th in Los Angeles, California at the Peacock Theater. You can read the full report by heading here.
