Hideki Kamiya Is Still Adamant For Another Try At Scalebound

Initially a veteran on the Capcom side of things, Hideki Kamiya went on to work on his own venture – PlatinumGames. After a successful trilogy for Bayonetta among other IPs, there recently has been a shift in his attendance. In 2023, he announced his departure from the studio he co-founded. But it was this past December he announced a new pursuit at Clovers where he’s returned for the long-awaited sequel for Okami.

And this does open opportunity to more highly-requested sequels as well. In a panel at PAX East in 2020, Kamiya even announced his hunger to do the same. “Okami 2… Scalebound… Viewtiful Joe 3… Dante vs. Bayonetta… Devil May Cry 0: The Episode of Sparda – I want to make everything! Please email Capcom.” And on social media recently, Kamiya has reflected on one IP that never made it to release.

In a post on X, Kamiya shared a video showcasing the development on Scalebound – an Xbox exclusive that was teased back in 2014. Kamiya in the video said “I’d love to make it again someday.” Adding with his own post, Kamiya also wrote: “Let’s do it, Phil!” Unfortunately, Scalebound was canceled back in 2017 and Microsoft remained the IP holder since the development was shelved.

That is not to say developments were made on possibly returning to Scalebound. Previously, it was reported that PlatinumGames might acquire the rights to Scalebound to pick up the challenge again. On the matter of what withheld the game from releasing, Kamiya did share previously that Unreal Engine was a major factor in which the team struggled to meet expectations internally leading to its cancellation.

However, Kamiya in the past has shouted Xbox’s way to return to the game. According to XboxEra, Scalebound was claimed to be in development at PlatinumGames in 2023. But, with the recent announcement for Ninja Gaiden 4, it is best to assume that was what the Japanese developer was truly collaborating with Xbox with. You can read the full report by heading here.
