While not directly revealing any titles that will be launching uniquely on this holiday season’s PlayStation 5, we have learned plenty of the ambitions that Sony is currently carving for the next-generation console. Earlier this morning, Eurogamer reported that Sony has begun instructing developers working on titles coming to the current PlayStation 4 to also work on creating a compatible version for the upcoming system.
The firm goes on to press that projects already available on the familiar unit will not be required to be compatible for PlayStation 5, but urges teams to take the opportunity if deciding to release a later patch/update. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO/President Jim Ryan also pressed on the matters of games that will be releasing for the new hardware when speaking with gamesindustry.biz.
Ryan told the outlet that Sony is still framing a holiday 2020 release for the system. But he does tell that the next wave of titles that will be arriving of the PlayStation 5 will not see a PlayStation 4 version. However, the same cannot be said vice versa when the discussion points to titles arriving on PlayStation 4.
Speaking with CNET elsewhere, Ryan shares details on the coming The Last of Us Part II. Although not fully confirming a next-generation version for the game, Ryan tells that the Naughty Dog sequel is expected to function properly on PlayStation 5 already. CNET phrases Ryan’s statement regarding The Last of Us Part II running on the PlayStation 5 to be “without issue.”
On the discussion of market reception for Naughty Dog’s approaching title, Ryan tells that user demand for the game looks to still hold its foundation despite the aurora of drama surrounding. For those who are un aware, users online spoiled certain segments of the mainline story for The Last of US Part II which sprung a negative connotation towards the game. But regardless of the contents of the game being in public view, the developer still urges followers to pick up the game for the overall experience of the follow-up.
Back on the topic of pre-orders, Ryan tells that Europe in particular sparked some excitement for the sequel. The president explained that The Last of Us Part II has surpassed pre-purchases in the region over Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man. Reflecting on the noise that embodied the superhero title at the time, this is surprising to hear a game surmount that milestone.
Do you plan on getting The Last of Us Part II for PlayStation 4 or wait for the hinted PlayStation 5 version?
The Last of Us Part II is listed to ship for PlayStation 4 on June 19, 2020.
