When consumers go looking for the latest and greatest headsets, they typically gravitate towards the ‘bigger’ brands such as Astro and Razer, and tend to forget about some of the newer rising brands. LucidSound offers a variety of headsets, and after testing them at an event at this years E3, I was certain I wanted to own a set. And thanks to the great people over at LucidSound, we now own our very own LucidSound LS20 headsets.

The LucidSound LS20 offers a nearly identical experience as my beloved Astro A40’s, but gives me the option to wear them in public. The LS20 is small enough to travel with, while still offering rich and clear audio. While these are 3.5mm wired headphones,  they offer a built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that holds a charge for about 20 hours that gives the option to amplify sounds. If you run out of charge, you can still use them in the unpowered Passive mode which still sounds pretty impressive.  The amplified sound quality is nothing short of incredible though, and will ensure that you will want to keep them charged at all times. I used them in a variety of settings to test out the sound quality and was left impressed with each one. For someone looking for a great headset on a budget, the LS20. Costing anywhere from $60-$99 online, you can’t go wrong.
I first tried them out on my Nintendo Switch in handheld mode on a few games including Zelda: Breath of the Wild and ARMS. Zelda offered a great audio experience and you could hear everything clearly, from the grass swaying in the wind to your metallic weapons clanging into metal objects, it all sounds rich. The same could be said for ARMS, the already great main menu music sounds even better on these than I recall, and made playing ranked mode online even more intense. I think that the LS20 is a perfect fit for the Switch, as they both offer the ability to be used at home or as a portable. I’ll definitely be bringing these on my next flight along with my Switch.

I also tested them on a few Xbox One titles, including Titanfall 2 and Halo 5: Guardians. Both allowed me to hear enemy footsteps and small details in the games. While the sound quality is great, the boom mic leaves a bit to be desired. It works but if given the option I would use my A40’s over these for situations where I need to chat. They also offer an integrated mic that really suffers from bad sound quality. I tested both of them and the integrated one was extra low and distorted, and I wouldn’t recommend using it.
The actual hardware itself is sleek, small and overall aesthetically pleasing. The option to raise or lower volume with the slider on the left ear-cup is a great feature that I wish more headsets would adopt. You also have the ability to mute both game sounds and the microphone right on the ear-cups. The set fits comfortably on my head and offers a great padding on top. My only caveat is that wearing them for an extended time could be uncomfortable as they are pretty tight on your ears. Those with larger ears may want the bigger LS30 or LS40 products that they offer.
Overall, the LucidSound LS20 is a solid product. Offering fantastic sound quality and a beautiful aesthetic, those looking for a new headset for home or to travel with can’t go wrong. Nintendo Switch users will especially love this, as it offers the great sound quality you’d expect from a home console but gives it on the go. I can definitely recommend this product for those in the market.[rwp-review id=”0″]
