Although gaming is one aspect of these consoles, streaming is also a priority for consumers to use their preferred hardware. Either through apps like Netflix, Hulu, or HBO Max, there are many avenues to access what you want to watch. But, purchasing media has been reduced already for one platform. In 2021, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced it would be pulling its film & TV categories on the PlayStation Store.

And although the option to further view new media has been removed, the PlayStation firm has entertained other avenues for this. In select regions, the ‘PlayStation Plus Video Pass’ was launched for subscribers to receive a roster of select Sony Pictures films as part of a perk. Additionally, this later evolved into what’s now the ‘Sony Pictures Core’ service.

Amid the shift at PlayStation, Xbox has continued to offer purchasing/renting film & television on the Microsoft Store for years after the decision at PlayStation. That was until this week. Via an update on Microsoft Support, the firm is officially shuttering the feature on the Microsoft Store – affecting both Xbox & Windows users.

“Microsoft no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store on Windows, and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. However, you can continue to access your purchased content in the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows device,” Microsoft lists on the Support page.

“You can continue to enjoy your previously purchased movies and TV shows using the Microsoft Movies & TV app on your Xbox or Windows device,” Microsoft adds in regards to the purchase movies or TV shows you own. “Downloads will continue to be available on Windows and in HD max resolution.”
